VEX EDR Project – Part I

VexEDRFrom: VEX Robotics

This is one of the very popular, main-stay, heavy duty robotic construction kits on the market. Steel construction components, nuts & bolts and heavy duty servo motors for locomotion. Fully RC and Autonomous out of the box after the initial build. The Cortex Microcontroller and wireless controller make this kit one that allows you to get right into programming immediately following the build. No additional components necessary!

Project Plan:

This kit comes as what VEX Robotics calls a “Clawbot”. Having built one Clawbot from scratch and having repaired one that managed to get damaged in all it’s Robot Magazine endeavors, I am opting to take this kit into a basic square platform and work with the many Vex accessories available. Sensors, Tank Treads, Optional Wheel and drive configurations, etc.

Fully functional base platform complete and operational in both RC and programmable modes.

Next Steps:

Addition of sensors and corresponding tests.

Reader Input:

I will do my utmost to make progress on this project by next issue and report on what’s going on with it… the successes and failures. I sometimes learn more from a failure than from a success so let’s see how much of each we find. If something strikes you about this project… please email me at with what you think. I look forward to hearing from you!
