VEX EDR Platform

Ok… this one is really fun to drive!  It looks so tough cruising around and sounds even better!

Wheels and gears pulled off… Treads in place!
This setup is allowing for quite a compact package allowing the Cortex and the battery to placed snugly into position.
Bottom view showing the cleanliness of the bottom of the bot as well as the tucked-away position of the auxiliary battery inside the left tread (right side of image since it’s upside down).
Ready for sensors and… Search & Rescue?

Project Plan:

This kit comes as what VEX Robotics calls a “Clawbot”. Having built one Clawbot from scratch and having repaired one that managed to get damaged in all it’s Robot Magazine endeavors, I am opting to take this kit into a basic square platform and work with the many Vex accessories available. Sensors, Tank Treads, Optional Wheel and drive configurations, etc.

Fully functional base platform complete with tank treads and operational in both RC and programmable modes.

Next Steps:

Addition of tank tread traction, sensors and corresponding tests.

Reader Input:

I will do my utmost to make progress on this project by next issue and report on what’s going on with it… the successes and failures. I sometimes learn more from a failure than from a success so let’s see how much of each we find. If something strikes you about this project… please email me at projects@botmag.com with what you think. I look forward to hearing from you!
