Of all these, I recommend the inertia labs kit as the top end. Not to demean any of the others, though. They are all great, and have their place and price points.

Personally I like gathering the components and building the bot chassis myself. If you are interested let me know and I'll post some design stuff.

Default Babe The Blue Bot

Here is my best antweight. This is a result of evolution over 47 documented fights and at least 5 major configuration shifts. One reason it ranks so low on Botrank (42 current, 55th historical) is that we used this as a testbed to build the "perfect" box/wedge bot. Sometimes experiments don't work so well, ha ha. Also our latest tourney isn't in there yet.

This version just won DART, going 5-0-1 and beating some really vicious spinners. It is tough enough to take major hits and keep on going. Two photos attached.

Outside: 3/16" Kevlar honeycomb from Acme Industrial Surplus. Sides and back overlaid with 0.012" 6AL-4V titanium from Titanium Joe. Plow is 0.050" titanium.

Inside (all from Robotcombat.com): Four 60:1 Copal gearmotors, 1.75" Dave Brown Lite Flites, Lynxmotion 3mm hubs. Sozbots 2.0 ESC, Thunder Power 11.1V, 730 mah LiPoly battery. GWS Micro receiver. Motor brackets 1/16" aluminum supporting motor shafts via close clearance hole. Wire ties or velcro hold components. 1/2" UHMW blocks from McMaster Carr stock hold frame together. DPDT switch and blue LED from Radio Shack.

Motor mount, Lite Flite combo "gives" on hits so never lost a gearbox. Kevlar top in picture is survivor of at least 10 spinner rides. Side armor has been changed once.

All built with hand tools and bench vise, explaining the rough cuts. Wiring has been redone 3x for different battery combos, plus combat repairs, so its a bit ragged.

One tough bot.

This would cost about $250 new, less the cost of battery charger and radio transmitter and crystals. I probably paid about $150 using used parts for much of it.

Sorry, posted in a hurry last time. Let me be more specific:

Four 60:1 Copal gearmotors $130 new, $80 used

1.75" Dave Brown Lite Flites, $10 new

Lynxmotion 3mm hubs $25 new

Sozbots 2.0 ESC $70 new, $40 used

Thunder Power 11.1V, 730 mah LiPoly battery $25 new

GWS Micro receiver $40 new

So thats a bit higher than I thought. Not counted in above is structural materials.

The transmitter, crystals, and battery charger would be extra.

BUT ... as I said in another post, best bet is just to build anything and work up. Start with hacking an R/C truck or battlebots toy and move up from there.
