A recent ScientificComputing article describes newmathematical techniques being used by researchers to model humanmovement and duplicate it in robots. The article talks about math behindthe Wasedabipedal humanoid (WABIAN) robots developed by AtsuoTakanishiat the TakanishiLab of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Also mentioned is the 12 DOFbipedal model developed by AsifMughal at the ControlSystems Lab of the University of Arkansas.Software advances in transforming and solving differential algebraicequations (DAEs) are also contributing to improved robot movement. Thearticle concludes, "Although the talking, overly-emotional robot ofour movies may still be a few years away, a robot that can walk andcarry our grand-parents' groceries may be only a few differentialequations away."
