Matt Trossen spoke at the recent RoboDevelopment conference on theneed for standards as robot and computer technology merge in the comingyears. He described hisvision for open robotics standards which includes an XML-based RobotObject Model describing sensor and actuator interfaces. He alsoaddressed a question from the audience on Microsoft's recent entry intorobotics and their apparent intention to proprietize the field, whichwould put them at odds with development of standards. Trossen expressedhis hope that Microsoft will accept community developed standardsrather than oppose them. His full talk is available as a 10part collection of YouTube videos For more details on existing XMLstandards in the field of robotics, see the SensorML sensor definitionlanguage and MaximMakatchev's RoboMLproposal. There's also PSU's XRCLproject (PDF format).
