Yale School of Medicine researchers report in The Journal ofNeurosciencethat newly created neurons use signals from distant brainareas to control growth, programming, and connections before theiroutputs are used by the network. The purpose might be to prevent young neurons from disrupting functionuntil they are ready to make a positive contribution. It's possible this idea could be incorporated into artificial neural nets to improve performance and to maintain stability duringgrowth phases by allowing neurons to begin learning while theiroutputs are inhibited. After a certain time, cycle count, or training goalis reached, the cell could be integrated with the rest of the network.
