i'm working on a science project and could use some help...

i'm looking for a way to do a motorized octopus...i want the tentacles to be able to move about on their own as if the octopus was alive (the body doesn't have to move, just the tentacles)...also, the motor needs to be quite small (<=2" on a side, if at all possible), as this will be done on a very small scale...figure that the octopus body will be about 8-10" and the tentacles will be 6-8" each...

can anyone help?

also, on a project-related (but not robot-related) note, i'm not sure what material to use for the body of the octopus...i'm thinking some sort of moldable rubber, but i'm not sure...any suggestion on this would also be appreciated...

have you thought about researching snake robots?

I'd try this:
rubber surgical tubing.
latex rubber outer skin.
submersible water pump.
corn syrop.

a hollow (filled with syrop) latex octopus with rubber tubing throuh the tentacles.

pumping water through the tentacles to use water jet pressure to animate the limbs.

you'd then need to use water temperature to control the viscosity of the syrop to control the speed of the limbs.
perhaps pic controlled valves to control the water jet flow through each tentacle.

once submerged, it should pass for a credible animatronic, but you won't have the kind of control, of a true robot.
