I have a specific purpose for a robot.

I need a robot that can travel back and forth on a wire. Say I had a 20 foot piece of wire that was 12" off the ground, I want a robot to travel back and forth on its own. Once it reaches one end it will need to reverse and go back to the other end.

The size of the robot could be as big as the palm of your hand, not too heavy. Powered by either battery or by the wire itself.

Are there any robots out there that do this today?

Thanks, Phil

I've never seen any commercial robots that travel on a wire like that but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

This would be pretty easy to build though, a couple of grooved wheels on the wire powered by an RC servo modified for continuous rotation. The servo, battery and control board would hang under the wire. Switches on the board triggered at each end could change the direction of rotation.

The only bot that I have seen designed to cross on a wire/string is the OWI Jungle Robot: http://www.owirobots.com/cart/index.php?l=product_detail&p=14
Hope this helps.

Hello,

In the day and age of wireless communication, I do not think that there are any robots that are spcifically designed to run only allong a wire.

Does this robot have a specific purpose?

Take a look at this:

a carriage , a DC motor, a battery, a 3 way switch and wheels. Now add about 2-4 hours for construction and you have what you need.

You can even modify (or not) one of these:

I have seen several indoor and outdoor Halloween props with something whizzing back and forth on a wire.
