Most people may not realize that NASA and NOAA have and underwater training facility off the coast of Florida called Aquarius. This facility is used as an analog for ISS, lunar and Mars training. Recently it has been used for testing robotic telesurgery procedures. Cincinnati Dr., Tim Broderick is currently on the NEEMO 12 mission and conducted a live demonstration presentation last night (May 9).

After giving us a live video tour of the facilities he allowed students from several Cincinnati middle schools to operate the robot. While located at the Cincinnati Museum center they had the chance to perform telerobotic procedures in Aquarius through the live feed.

As plans to live on the Moon and Mars move forward research such as this will help make those goals possible.

I've been working on some NEEMO materials and found a few links that might interest some on telerobotic surgical robots.

The general link to the NASA NEEMO site is

To the robot sites for the surgical robots
