Hello all,

I'm a student of design engineering in the process of writing my bachelor thesis on robotics. My focus is on radically new and innovative products / developers. I really enjoyed the thread "What does 'robot' mean to you" (http://www.botmag.com/forum/showthread.php?t=285) and have found the posts both inspirering and thought provoking. So now I would like to test my ideas on the members on this forum.

The following is a quick pitch for the project: ----------------------------

Robotics is a field under rapid development. More powerful and more easily available development platforms offers new opportunities for robotic development. And for new developers too.

You no longer have to be an engineer to produce mechatronic systems. Designers, artists, architects and a wide range of other actors, are joining in, offering a radical innovation, challenging the conception of robotics itself. New products are emerging, as the line between mechatronics, robotics and interaction design is being blurred.

Robots are hot, and application contexts are numerous. Yet we still don't see robots in our everyday life.

What are the main obstacles for succesful implementation of robotic technology in our everyday lives?

What are the possibilities for new actors, entering the robotic development arena? Is the development arena changing its form?

Has the time come for a new scope on robotics? Even a new definition?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

All feedback is greatly appreciated!

could we approach robots as "smart objects" ?
(as a parallel to the architectural "smart buildings")

would this help us (and the consumers) to look past the mythological heritage of robotics and the general perception of what a robot should be (anthropomorphism, humanoids etc.)

- - - would this view put us in a better position to design tools/products/robots that are more prone to social acceptance?

hi again,

my bachelor thesis "a new approach to domestic robots" is now done. within it is an extensive discussion on the definition of the word robot, an discussion on robots as "smart objects" and the possibilities this approach has to offer. plus a whole lot more. :D

the whole report can be downloaded via this link (http://campingsex.org/bachelor/media/BACHELOR_lores.pdf) (25MB .pdf)

feedback is much appreciated!

best regards,
