View Full Version : Beyond the BOE bot

I'm about done getting through the material for the Parrallax BOE Bot (USB edition). My question is more of a solicitation for advice. I would ulitmately like to make an automous robot that does tasks I've programmed it to do (carry things around, etc.) and that is capable of handling heavy objects (i.e. around 150 to 250 lbs. - NOT PEOPLE). I'm not asking how to make it, but with that goal in mind, does anyone have any suggestions as to what kit I should consider buying next? I'm a .Net programmer so customizing the BOE bot seems a natural choice (as one of the articles described), but I will need a platform that ports it's own code eventually and the BOE bot would need it's code transmitted to it. Any ideas?

Why another kit? Is there any reason why you can't just start into the robot you'd eventually like to have?

Harry,
I don't necessarily need another kit. I just thought it would be nice to work on some code that was more granular than PBASIC is on the BOE bot. It only deals in whole numbers, for example. Also, I would like to "can" some algorhythyms to speed the development process when I work on the "chore bot". I would prefer something in C, C++, Java, or - of course - .Net (pick a language).

Why not try your Boebot with a propeller chip then? Spin looks like a powerful language and Parallax has already got some tutorials and libraries up. I'm in the process of learning the chip and language and I really like what I've seen so far.
I think Robot might have an article on a Propeller powered Boebot in the next issue.

Chris, the Orangutan is popular with a "C" buddy of mine. Also they are working a lot of open source code on sourceforge for it.

Harry and Kevin,
Thank you both very much for your input on this. Now I have a direction to head in. I'll submit some progress reports as things develop.
Thanks again!

Look into Shadow Robot's air muscles for the arm. The IntelliBrain looks real good as a controller. Being able to write the code in Java sure beats the heck out of PBASIC.
