Robotics kit for a newbie

Hi there,

I'm totally new to robotics, however have plenty of embedded programming experience in various languages. I would like to build a roach-like robot or at least a wheeled robot that can get into tight spaces and broadcast a video stream back to the "home base" through a camera mounted on it. I'm open to recommendations on kits, robotics vendors, etc.
