Well, I've heard of people getting some great deals at the places that sell and service wheelchairs but those days are probably over. But you can always try, it's only a phone call. The other option is buying new.

I think I posted this somewhere else on this forum, but basically I walked into my local wheelchair/scooter store, told them what I was doing, and got flooded with help, including an offer of a complete electric scooter carcass with motors, ESC and joystick plus batteries. They also had a whole box full of old gearmotors. So if there is an electric scooter store, medical supply store, or suchlike nearby I'd just waltz in the give it a try.
