This one is interesting and do-able, plus it has a high "cool" factor with your teenagers

The desire to design and build an "ED 209" is almost unbearable.

Metalstorm comes to mind, however, its dependence on explosive ordnance might be a limiting factor....

In High School and College I was on a smallbore rifle team. I had thought about how much more accurate a robotic rifle would be. Without a pulse, and breath control that humans must have, and with the ablility to hold on target without muscle fatigue a robot target shooter should be unbeatable. I'm sure it would break NRA rules somehow but it would be interesting to try.

Wow. That is deeply wrong on so many levels.

I think it would be interesting to make a servo-controlled gun stabilizer that would keep the gun pointed in the right direction despite movements caused by the shooters breathing, etc. Kind of like the "steady shot" (interesting naming coincidence there!) features that are built into some digital camcorders these days.

A device like this probably violates NRA rules too, but it would be an interesting project.
